The Holophane production facility received an LED high bay retrofit in 2014 with the prime objective of reducing maintenance and energy consumption. Existing 400W Multi Vapour high bays were replaced with the multi-award winning Haloprism LED high bays. 39,000lm Haloprism luminaires were fitted on a one for one basis resulting in a 55% improvement in lux levels (550lux to 1215lux) and a 17.5% reduction in energy consumption before any dimming or controls.
With already impressive initial energy and maintenance savings from moving to Haloprism LED high bays the challenge looked to answer the question of how much more savings and additional value could be leveraged from the new installation with a smart integrated controls system. What were the real-world savings when applied and adapted to work flexibly in a manufacturing environment.
HOLOS3 Air was the perfect solution to convert the Holophane factory installation into a smart integrated controlled system. Offering a web-based, wireless control, monitoring and management system for the Haloprisms, HOLOS3 Air helps provide a platform to maximise energy savings and reduce carbon emissions. Opening up the possibility for users to have the freedom to configure and completely control a lighting installation.
With the ability to now apply control strategies the Halorprism luminaires can be programmed to dim at pre-set time schedules. The Holophane factory lighting, in this case, can be controlled to dim during breaks when full output isn’t required. Additionally, the lighting is programmed to turn off at night times and only essential lighting needed is left on during these hours. Easily applied using the web-based platform, users have the flexibility to change the lighting in real-time whilst also being able to select and set-up other control strategies to suit the situation. It also gives users access to customisable reporting which can be outputted from the web-based platform for more accurate analysis of energy savings and CO2 emissions.
Even with a simple dimming strategy applied, significant savings can be achieved (with the ability to achieve additional savings if sensors are used). With data used for 2017 vs. a Haloprism installation with no intelligent controls, HOLOS3 Air has achieved an additional saving, on average, of 37% in energy savings over the calendar year. This then also equates to an overall general reduction in energy consumption due to the pre-set dimming strategies.
CO2 emissions have also been significantly reduced, achieving nearly a 4,900kg reduction in CO2 emissions over 2017. The payback on the HOLOS3 Air controls, depending on the system size, dimming strategies and sensors, could be as little as 5 years.
The HOLOS3 Air solution therefore gives huge potential for facilities mangers and building managers to unlock greater savings on their lighting installations.
