IDA: The Fixture Seal of Approval

Holophane Europe Ltd is proud to announce that we have joined the International Dark Dark-Sky Association, helping to accomplish their mission to protect and restore our natural night environment.

The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) is the recognized authority on light pollution and is the leading organization combating light pollution worldwide. In part of their strategic work the IDA educates lighting designers, manufacturers, technical committees and the public about controlling light pollution. They recognize that the best way to accomplish our goal of protecting and restoring our natural night environment is through the promotion of quality outdoor lighting.

To achieve this, the IDA has developed the ‘Fixture Seal of Approval’ program to provide objective, third-party certification for lighting that minimizes glare, reduces light trespass and doesn’t pollute the night sky.

Under this program Holophane has successfully obtained the ‘Fixture Seal of Approval’ for the following products*:

  • D-Series
  • HMAO
  • Signature (Post Top & Side Arm)
  • Factor Small
  • Denver iD: Wall and Pole
  • Wallpack
  • CityMax & CityMax Large
  • V-Max
  • S/R Line
  • Parkpack
*note that only fittings specified with colour temperatures 3000K or warmer are approved under the IDA

Who are the IDA?

The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) is the recognized authority on light pollution and is the leading organization combating light pollution worldwide. The IDA is the authoritative voice on light pollution. Their mission is to preserve and protect the nighttime environment and our heritage of dark skies through quality outdoor lighting’.

What are the benefits of being IDA approved?

The International Dark-Sky Association, educates lighting designers, manufacturers, technical committees and the general public about controlling light pollution. The benefits of receiving the Fixture Seal of Approval from the IDA, provides certification that our luminaires minimize glare, reduce light trespass, and do not pollute the night sky.

We are proud to have received the Fixture Seal of Approval, helping to accomplish their mission to protect and restore our natural night environment.

Why is the IDA approval so important?

With the rise of LED luminaires, the IDA is concerned about the potential negative effects. The case against blue light is well founded regarding discomfort, glare, circadian rhythm disruption, light scattering, skyglow and biological system disruption in wildlife.

‘Outdoor lighting with high blue light content is more likely to contribute to light pollution because it has a significantly larger geographic reach than lighting with less blue light. In natural settings, blue light at night has been shown to adversely affect wildlife behavior and reproduction. This is true even in cities, which are often stopover points for migratory species.’ - The International Dark-Sky Association
