PROJECT OVERVIEW

BP and ASCO recently commissioned their brand new 125,000 sq. ft. distribution Warehouse in Aberdeen. RSP Consulting Engineers were tasked with creating a low carbon distribution centre where BP and ASCO could locate all of their assets. Paul Quinn of RSP Consulting Engineers told us that “the initial concept design looked to use 400W metal halide highbay luminaires in the warehouse’s open areas, but after further investigation and calculations using Holophane’s Haloprism, it was identified that superior lighting conditions could be achieved using a 300W version of the LED luminaire.”

Compared to the original design with 400W metal halide luminaires in the open areas, BP and ASCO are achieving energy savings of 49% whilst also dramatically reducing maintenance. This equates to an energy saving of 170,000 KWH per year, without the addition of controls.

The Solution

Holophane’s HOLOS Wired Lighting Controls were also used on the project, providing even further energy savings, integrating daylight and presence control throughout the warehouse as well as the ability to immediately increase the light output up to 100% with the push of a button.

The high-level racking required a different approach and it was decided that Holophane’s DC Rack luminaire offered the opportunity to make further energy savings due to the integrated presence detection and also reduce ongoing maintenance.


Client feedback

How the work was received

Initial feedback from BP and ASCO has indicated that the DC Rack luminaire has proven to be energy efficient whilst giving the operating staff visual comfort when entering the racked area.

The warehouse also uses Holophane’s Emergency LED Capsule luminaire to finish the complete interior lighting solution. The luminaire is compatible with the HOLOS WIred controls system, does not require any maintenance and has a 3-hour battery life where it produces c.400 lumens.

RSP believe that by using the Holophane solution, including the controls system, that they have produced one of the most energy efficient lighting schemes for a warehouse, certainly in Aberdeen and possibly in the UK.
