ABOUT THE PROJECT

GTR Rail has recently built a brand new multi-storey car park at Hatfield Railway Station to cope with increased demand from commuters for safe and secure parking.

The new car park provides parking for over 250 vehicles over seven levels and features advanced technology including automatic number plate recognition to help make it easier for customers to park and then pay for their session without requiring a printed ticket.

The car park also features a state-of-the-art lighting system consisting of Holophane DSX Parking Garage LED luminaires throughout the covered decks and stairwells, and DSX1 column-mounted luminaires to illuminate the top deck.

The DSX Parking Garage luminaires feature both presence detection and daylight dimming technology which ensured that the most economical solution was achieved. The fittings respond to ambient lighting levels and the movement of people throughout the space, dimming down and switching off as required. There are estimated typical energy savings of up to 75% when the car park is used as a true commuter station (usage at 7am & 7pm daily). If used throughout the day, typical estimated energy savings of about 30% - 40% would be expected.

Andrew Sidgwick, Head of Projects at GTR Rail, was in charge of commissioning the new car park and delivering the finished project on time and to budget. "The Holophane products are ideal for our application as they feature a very well-controlled beam with a precise cut off which is vital for us, as we have trains running adjacent to the car park. We had to make sure that the drivers were not subjected to any glare from the lighting which we have achieved perfectly." said Andrew in a recent case study interview.

"We also found that we needed fewer luminaires than we first anticipated due to the highly efficient distribution from the DSX Parking Garage fittings - and that when we measured the light levels the illumination was actually higher than we expected it to be".

The luminaires were specified and installed by major Coventry-based electrical contractor Daley Engineering Services. Project Manager Richard Marsh commented "We were happy to work with Holophane on this project as we have had a good relationship with them over the years. We worked with them from design to completion and they sent two engineers upon final installation to fully commission the lighting".

Andrew Sidgwick went on to add "Our customers have commented that they feel safe and secure in the car park due to the superb lighting and we will be using the same Holophane products on our future projects".

This project once again highlights the strength of the Holophane product range and the superb level of service and technical support offered to their clients across all types of industrial and commercial projects.
